Preparing and using lathes for turning operations QPEO2/011N K1 Outline the safe working practices and procedures to be followed when preparing and using lathes (such as ensuring the correct isolation of the machine before mounting work holding devices; fitting and adjusting machine guards, ensuring that the workpiece is secure, and that tooling is free from the workpiece before starting the machine) K1 One safe working practice would be making sure the chuck is secure in the spindle and that there is nothing inside the spindle nose unsecured, like a piece of spare bar. Another thing is that you must check it isn’t damaged in any way otherwise this can cause damage to the machine or you as some pieces could fly off. Another one would be to make sure you wear your safety glasses and safety boots before checking the machine is functioning. You also must make sure to wear your overalls to protect yourself and your clothes. Always before switching the machine on, you must make sure that the guard is closed so that you are protected from any flying suave and that no automatic feeds are engaged before turning on. You should also make sure the chuck key is not left in the chuck.

Preparing and using lathes for turning operations QPEO2/011N

K1 Outline the safe working practices and procedures to be followed when
preparing and using lathes (such as ensuring the correct isolation of the
machine before mounting work holding devices; fitting and adjusting machine
guards, ensuring that the workpiece is secure, and that tooling is free from the
workpiece before starting the machine)
K1 One safe working practice would be making sure the chuck is secure in the spindle and that there
is nothing inside the spindle nose unsecured, like a piece of spare bar. Another thing is that you must
check it isn’t damaged in any way otherwise this can cause damage to the machine or you as some
pieces could fly off. Another one would be to make sure you wear your safety glasses and safety boots
before checking the machine is functioning. You also must make sure to wear your overalls to protect
yourself and your clothes. Always before switching the machine on, you must make sure that the
guard is closed so that you are protected from any flying suave and that no automatic feeds are
engaged before turning on. You should also make sure the chuck key is not left in the chuck.

K2 Identify the hazards associated with the turning operations (such as
revolving/moving parts of machinery, airborne and hot metal particles, sharp
cutting tools and burrs and sharp edges on component), and how they can be
Minimised
K2 One hazard when the chuck is spinning is the speed at which it runs at this is dangerous because if
you get something caught in the chuck it can be dangerous to the machinist. A way to minimise this is
to stand near the stop button as well as using a machine guard to protect yourself from it. Another
hazard is hot suave flying off the machine to minimise this from occurring you can wear overalls to
help protect your skin from minor burns. You can also wear eye protection to minimise the risk of hot
swarf hitting and damaging your eyes. You must be careful of sharp edges and make sure to stay away
from the machine when sharp objects are rotating. After an operation has been complete you must
make sure you give the component or part time to cool off as it gets extremely hot throughout an
operation so you should allow it to cool to help lower the risk of burns. You must also make sure that
the workpiece is secured within the chuck.

K3 Outline the personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn for the turning
activities (such as correctly fitting overalls and safety glasses; ensuring that, if
they have long hair it is tied back or netted; and removing any jewellery or
other items that can become entangled in the machinery)

, K3 When working on turning activities you must make sure to wear steel toed shoes so that if
anything heavy or sharp comes off the machine tour feet are protected. Another one I correct overalls
so that you minimise the amount of skin on show so that you don’t get burnt as much by the hot
suave. You must make sure that the overalls are the correct size and aren't baggy otherwise it could
get caught in the machine. Another piece of PPE is safety glasses which help protect your eyes from
objects hitting them. You must make sure to have your hair tied up if you have long hair as this may
become entangled in the moving parts of the machine.

K4 Describe the safety mechanisms on the machine (such as emergency stop
buttons, emergency treadle brakes), and the procedure for checking that they
function correctly
K4 On a lathe there is a foot brake directly under the machine which if pressed will stop the machine
entirely just in case something is going wrong. You can check this via setting up the chuck and
switching it on and press the brake to see if it stops it. You also have an emergency stop button which
will shut down the machine entirely this is within arm's reach of the machinist, so it is easily
accessible. The emergency stop button is tagged with a yellow disc so when in emergency it is easily
recognisable.

K5 Describe the correct operation of the machine controls in both hand and
power modes, how to stop the machine in both normal and emergency
situations, and the procedure for restarting after an emergency
K5 The correct operations will occur when they use the correct tools for specific tasks. You must
make sure that the machine is correctly aligned. You must also make sure to wear all of the correct
protection gear so that you are well protected from any hazards. To stop a machine in a normal
situation the start and stop lever on the saddle should be used then the auto feed lever must be
disengaged to stop the cutting tool from auto moving when turning back on. In an emergency situation
the foot brake will turn off the power directly from the machine resulting in the machine spindle to
stop it. The other two ways would be the start lever and the red emergency stop button as these both
cut the power to the machine. After an emergency you must turn the power to the machine off
completely then run a safety checklist to evaluate the machine and make sure it is safe to use. You
must make sure you safely remove the problem when the machine is off, so you aren't in any danger.

K6 Outline the planning and preparing needed to carry out the machining
operations (such as obtaining the component drawing, determining the
machines required, selecting materials, selecting work holding methods and
devices, selecting cutting tools, determining a suitable sequence of
operations, determining quality checks to be made and equipment to be used)
