Meteorology - Answer- The study of the atmosphere and atmospheric phenomenon (i.e., the
science that examines the atmosphere).

Gases in the atmosphere - Answer- Nitrogen 78%
Oxygen 21%
Argon less than 1%

Carbon Dioxide - Answer- less than 1% but very important. Very important in heating our
atmosphere. It is a green house gas.

Water Vapor - Answer- 0-4%. Source of precipitation to liquid or solid. Important in heating
the atmosphere. It is a green house gas. Releases latent heat when forming clouds and precip

Ozone - Answer- less than 1%. Most abundant between 10 km to 50 km which is known as
the ozone layer. Absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation. Primary ingredient in photochemical
smog.

Aerosols - Answer- tiny (< ~1 micron) solid and liquid particles suspended in the atm

Troposphere - Answer- (sfc to ~10 km; deeper near the equator, becomes shallower towards
the poles) temperature generally decreases with height. Weather formation

Stratosphere - Answer- 10 km to 50 km. Temp increase when height increases because of
the absorption of uv radiation by the ozone layer.

Mesosphere - Answer- 50 km to 90 km. temp decrease with height

Thermosphere - Answer- 90 km and up. Temp increases with height due to absorption of high
energy solar radiation by oxygen. Temp dependent on solar activity
