Overview:

Equality- The principle of equality means treating everyone equally and applying equal
treatment to everyone according to their needs and making sure everyone has equal
opportunities.

Diversity- Respecting the differences between people, including their culture, beliefs, and
lifestyle, is a key to diversity.

Valerie is obese and suffers from mental health problems, which may lead her to
experiencing discrimination and inequality because of her physical appearance.
Valerie has a hearing impairment which may make her vulnerable to discrimination as she
may be treated unfairly. In the case study it mentions how she has never been assessed for
any support to improve her hearing.
In Tremaynes' case, it mentions he has autism, lives independently, but has carers who
assist him, has a wheat allergy, but eats pizzas and sandwiches, and displays disruptive
behaviour and temper tantrums. Tremayne having autism may have him experience
discrimination as he has a disability which makes him vulnerable.

The Equality Act 2010

, ‘The Equality Act 2010 is a legislation which legally protects individuals from
discrimination.’
The Equality Act 2010 protects individuals under the 9 characteristics which include age,
disability, race, religion, gender, pregnancy, sex, sexual orientation and marriage.
Under the Equality Act 2010, service users who are accessing health or social care settings
are protected from unfair treatment and are able to access the services they require.

Promoting Equality and Diversity is important as it allows individuals to have their needs
met as well as allowing them to feel valued. Equality and Diversity ensures that service
users are provided with equal opportunities which will also include empowering them by
meeting their personalised care.
Valerie's mental health will be positively impacted by equal opportunities since she will
feel valued and this will facilitate her building the courage and confidence to make friends
in her area as well as making healthy life choices.

Due to Tremayne having autism, he is subjected to discrimination. He has outbursts which
leads him to having difficulties in coping with his emotions which may lead him to isolate
himself. It will be crucial to prevent discrimination because if not, he may start experiencing
mental health problems such as depression.

Since Valerie suffers from mental health issues and low self-esteem, discrimination could
have a negative impact on her mental health, causing her to experience depression or
suicidal thoughts.
‘Depression affects your feelings, thoughts, and behaviour and can lead to a variety of
emotional and physical problems’.
