ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE
Active: the subject is actually doing the action
Eg – I swallowed 4 tablets
Passive: the subject is not doing the action. The action is being done to the subject by
someone else
Eg – 4 tablets were swallowed by me

• Any clause that is followed by a subordinating conjunction = subordinate clause
• Any clause that follows a coordinating conjunction = main clause
• Any clause left over = main clause

3. Simple – no conjunctions
4. Compound complex – sub & coordinating conjunctions
