NR_351 Week 5 Discussion, Leadership to Improve Quality in Diverse Situations This is a graded discussion: 50 points possible due Feb 4 Week 5: Leadership to Improve Quality in Diverse Situations Nurses demonstrate leadership in many situations. For this discussion, identify only one situation from the choices below that you have not previously experienced, and tell us how the nurse could improve quality through demonstrating leadership. Communicating with legislators to influence health policy Clinical leadership at the bedside Nursing management of units or facilities Impact of systems-based practice on leadership -- Deborah Augustyniak Yesterday Jan 27 at 6:54pm Class, you may begin posting in this TD on Sunday, January 28, 2018, which is Preview Day for Week 5. We are well aware that leadership does not always mean management. Nurses demonstrate leadership in many different ways and in many different positions. “Nursing requires leadership, yet progress in leadership behaviors is sometimes difficult to measure” (Foli, Braswell, Kirkpatrick, & Lim, 2014, p. 81). For this discussion, you are instructed to step outside of your comfort zone of discussing what you’ve done previously. This time, you must select one of the four situations listed above that you have not previously experienced. We look forward to your detailed description of how nurses can improve quality through demonstrating leadership in the option you select from the list. Professor Augustyniak Reference Foli, K. J., Braswell, M. Kirkpatrick, J., & Lim, E. (2014). Development of leadership behaviors in undergraduate nursing students: A service-learning approach. Nursing Education Perspectives, 34(2), 76-82. -- Response 1: Professor and classmates, According to Hood “leaders are people who influence others” and they “view issues globally, create visions of what might be, inspire others, tolerate chaos and ambiguity, do not fear taking risks, and work with others in a more connected way” while “managers usually receive their title because of an appointment to a position within an organization” and “tend to focus energy and efforts to ensure a smooth workflow and the efficient use of resources to meet the objectives of the organization” (Hood, 2018). I believe that we could use our nursing and leadership skills to influence public policy. Nurses could draw on our experience and can use real-life examples while communicating with legislators to change health policies (Mary A. Maryland, 2012). Nurses have a unique advantage of knowing patients needs and what needs to be improved in the health care setting. As a nurse leader we can advocate for patients and nurses. Nurses are on the front line and understand healthcare issues directly and being in a leadership position can make changes in quality outcomes, healthcare cost, and access to healthcare services. Nurses can take an active role in the community and convince representatives in public office to start outreach programs centered on disease prevention and education. References: Hood, L. (2018).
