Nursing and Primary Care for All NAME Chamberlain College of Nursing NR 553: Global Health Policy DATE Explore one global health agency and describe the involvement of nursing in providing primary healthcare for a community, region, or nation. Week 6: Nursing and Primary Care for All According to the World Health Organization (2018), primary healthcare refers to caring for people rather than just treating the conditions or diseases they face. Besides, it is often the first point of contact people have with healthcare systems. PHC also facilitates the provision of comprehensive, community-based, accessible care that adequately meets the health and wellbeing needs of individuals throughout their life. It also includes a broad spectrum of services, including prevention, management of chronic conditions as well as palliative care. Further, health systems with primary healthcare at their core deliver better health outcomes, efficiency and promote quality of care than other models. However, the development of PHC has been mostly unequal globally, due to low investments, lack of political will and misconceptions among other reasons. However, there are some organizations that nurses can be involved in promoting PHC The Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, now widely referred to as Sigma, is a global nursing professional organization founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University School of Nursing. Its primary mission was to advance global health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership as well as service. The nonprofit organization was incorporated in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International Inc. The membership to Sigma is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students as well as nurse leaders who exhibit excellence in their respective areas. The organization has over 135,000 active members spread across about 100 countries. Besides, there are more than 500 chapters at various institutions of higher learning globally. The organization supports the nursing professional development through different products and services as well as contributing to research through grants, scholarship and monetary rewards. Consequently, the knowledge gained through Sigma’s diverse activities helps in promoting primary health care globally (Sigma Global Nursing Excellence, 2018). They are the stakeholders and need to be educated on what to do and how to do it so when the international relief has left, they can continue on their own. Leslie, You made an interesting point regarding the need for international organizations to engage “locals” to help with the work being done in their countries. Effective disaster risk reduction requires community participation. The involvement of communities in the design and implementation of activities helps to ensure that they are well tailored to the actual vulnerabilities and to the needs of the affected people. This informed engagement helps to avoid problems and secondary effects when hazard events occur. The incorporation of local perspectives into decision-making and activities also helps to ensure that changes in vulnerability and perception of risk are recognized and factored into institutional processes, risk assessments, and other programs and policies. RESPONSE TO PEER POST: Thank you for sharing the information about The Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Diane, I chose to discuss STTI because last year I was given the opportunity to join the Phi Pi Chapter by invitation in 2017 due to my academic achievements. The Phi Pi Chapter was formed on October 20, 2011, and is the 494th chapter established at Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. The current president of Phi Pi Chapter is LeAnne Prenovost. Personally, I had never heard of Sigma until last year and I never saw any real reason to join a nursing professional organization. Yes, like many other professional organizations, Sigma offers continuing nursing education credit through online courses. However, I was intrigued by all the various networking opportunities. Sigma offers its members various avenues to connect and engage with a global community of nurses through online platforms and communities and at STTI events and conferences. The second reason I decided to join was Sigma offered resources to help expand my career through online and in-person advising, mentoring, and coaching. Finally, becoming part of Sigma Theta Tau International is a great opportunity for nurses and nursing students to strengthen their commitment to continued learning as well as to build leadership quality.
