Reproductive strategies Behaviours that evolve to maximize an individual's
reproductive success.
Courtship Courtship displayis a special, sometimes ritualized, set of
behaviors which some animals perform. To ensure best
genetic match
External fertilisation Takes place outside female body often in water, there are
lots of eggs to ensure successful fertilisation.
Internal fertilisation Fertilization which takes place inside the female body,
lots of sperm but fewer eggs. Inside the body means it is
protected
Ovipary Refers to the development of a fertilised egg that has
been laid. The development of this egg occurs outside
the body and the young hatch from the egg.
Ovovivipary Egg is kept inside the female body until it hatches and the
offspring leave the mothers body which is not birth
Vivipary When the young embryo develops in the female body using
the females body as nutrients.
Amniotic egg Is a normal egg with a fluid filled space with an
embryo to develop
Precocial development Species in which the young are mobile from birth or
hatching
Altricial development Means the offspring after hatching are very dependent on
the parents
Parental care Feeding and nurturing young until they’re old enough
to do it themselves
