Evolution of the Hospital Industry: A Comparative Analysis
The American hospital industry is an ever-changing and evolving industry. The first
hospital was established in 1751 (Johnson et al., 2022, p. 38). Since then, the United States has
continued to improve the hospital environment and level of care. In addition, there has been an
, increased focus on physician education and covering the cost of care. This paper will review the
changes made in these areas from the 1800s to now.
Hospital Care Evolution
Appendix A: Comparative Analysis Table: Hospital Care Evolution provides a snapshot
of changes between the 1800s, 1960s, and today. This grid includes significant events that helped
to shape Hospital Care in America.
Hospital Environment
According to Johnson et al. (2022, p. 38), the first hospital was established to care for the
poor, while the wealthy received private care at home (History of Hospitals, n.d.). These early
facilities were often dark and unsanitary, resulting in the spread of disease. As time went on and
research continued, the hospital environment improved. By the 1960s, facilities became more
readily available and sanitary. Introducing air conditioning, better lighting, and technology, such
as X-rays, computed tomography (CT), and anesthesia, helped prevent the spread of disease and
improve diagnosis (Johnson et al., 2022, p. 50). Today hospitals have become even more
advanced through researching germs and bacteria. Hospitals now have advanced air filtration
systems, disposable personal protective equipment (PPE) to eliminate carrying germs from one
room to another, and even more advanced imaging.
