What is Appreciative Inquiry (AI)?
Appreciative inquiry is a positive philosophy for change wherein whole systems
convene to inquire for change” (Kloppenborg, 2015, p. 23). It based on the group’s
collective sharing of ideas with the goal of positively affecting the future or outcome.
The process typically works in four phases Discovery, Dream, Design, and Delivery.
Even though it might not be identified as Appreciative Inquiry, the idea is widely use in
organizations and groups working towards achieving the goal to be labeled as High
Reliability Organizations (HRO).
The process is useful and relevant in Project Management in specific when
defining a Project Scope. Appreciative Inquiry starts with the Discovery (what has
been?) phase Appreciative Inquiry embarks on finding the positive strengths of the
, stakeholders. They collaborate with sharing information that help identify their
strengths, assets, peak experience, and achievements which will help the rest of the
group develop an understanding of what helped led them to positive experiences
(Kloppenborg, 2015). The Dream (what it could be?) phase allows the group to imagine
of the of the desired, perfect or positive future. The group places great positive
emphasis on the group's strengths and dreaming in the direction of what makes the
group feel comfortable to continue towards their goal or future.
Design (What it should be?) phase is when without any restraints the group
establishes or designs the principles that will make their vision possible and successful.
The group is encourage of use a no constraint approach to reach that perfect project
scope. During Delivery (what will be?) the group focuses on the sustainment or what is
necessary of them in term of commitment to secure their vision or project completion.
