, Establishing a Professional Presence to Promote a Healthy Work Environment
Using Each SEI Power Skill to Manage Difficult Workplace Situations The
healthcare field is a broadly diverse industry. We work with many other healthcare
professionals, social workers, case managers, patients, and their families. People come from all
different backgrounds and have different ideas, beliefs, and experiences, which can often lead to
challenges and conflicts. Nurse clinicians and leaders can use social and emotional intelligence
power skills to manage these challenges and conflicts. The five power skills are self-awareness,
social awareness, self-management, interpersonal communication, and executive function. All
five concepts are linked. Mastering and using the power skills can help build relationships and
resolve conflicts, which can improve joy in the workplace.
Self-awareness
Self-awareness is understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses, and being receptive to
feedback (Rhodes & Foran, 2022). A self-aware person understands his/her own emotions and
how they can affect behavior, as well as being able to identify the emotions of others. By
knowing what is going on within yourself and what drives your emotions can help you
communicate more effectively, build relationships, have self-confidence, and facilitate decision-
making when facing a difficult situation.
Self-management
Self-management is the ability to accept responsibility, be accountable for, and
effectively manage one’s behavior, actions, and well-being (WGU, n.d.). Impulse control and
self-discipline are critical for handling difficult workplace situations by helping you manage your
emotions and stress and maintaining positive behaviors, which aids in making sound decisions.
One should take initiative in a difficult situation to set a common goal or desired outcome and be
