To what extent was military failure the main cause for the collapse of Mussolini’s regime in July 1943?

Military failure was the main cause for the collapse of Mussolini’s regime in July 1943 as it served as the
long term factor and the trigger point for the collapse. While economic failures such as decreased
industrial production and the poor mobilisation of the economy led to public dissent (March riots of
1943), they ultimately were short term factors and did not bring about Mussolini’s fall. Additionally,
despite growing disillusionment and protest towards the war, that would have not existed if not the
numerous military failings making it bot the root cause for the collapse of the regime.

Military failure was the main case for the collapse of the regime as it only exacerbated the Italian
populations distaste for the war. In October 1940 when Mussolini invaded Greece with only 70,000 men,
vastly underestimating the size of the Grecian troops, he appeared as an impulsive weak leader who
struggled to fight even a 4th rate power such as Greece. This helped bring about the collapse of his
regime as before that campaign he kept the plan secret from his own generals and Hitler, giving him the
image of a glory seeker with very little strategic planning, increasing the resentment towards him from
even his most trusted men. Additionally, there was very little organisation of the command structure
under Mussolini, making military matters chaotic and confused, evidenced by the fact that poor
planning often led to artillery being in the wrong location during battle. While pre-1940, this limited
structure was a strength for Mussolini as no-one could militarily challenge him, now it led to him taking
