Prevention of CAUTI starts with avoiding indwelling catheter use. Indwelling catheter use should be avoided whenever possible. 
Clients at higher risk for CAUTI include female clients, older adult clients and those diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. 
The nurse should determine whether indwelling catheter use is warranted prior to insertion and should reassess whether continued use is still warranted every shift.
