What is the subject of a sentence?

The thing or person that the sentence is about - often, that thing or person is performing an action, which is the verb.

What is the purpose of a subordinate clause?

A subordinate clause adds additional information to the main clause, but often would not make sense on its own.

Are subordinating conjunctions always located between the clauses they are connecting?

No. Interestingly (and often confusingly), subordinating conjunctions do not always need to be placed between the clauses they are joining, but instead are sometimes placed at the beginning of the sentence.
