16 Patton Ch 17
metabolism - how the body uses nutrients after they have been digested,
absorbed and transported to cells; catabolism and anabolism together
assimilation - when nutrient molecules enter cells and undergo various chemical
changes
catabolism - chemical reactions that release energy from nutrient molecules; the
only means by which the body can supply itself with energy to do work
anabolism - the process that builds nutrient molecules and combines smaller
molecules into more complex chemical compounds
plasma proteins - protein dissolved in blood plasma
prothrombin and fibrinogen - plasma proteins formed by liver play essential roles
in blood clotting
albumin - protein made by liver cells; helps maintain normal blood volume
monosaccharide - fruit, honey, corn syrup; source of energy; used to build other
carbs
