Cultivating Healthful Environments
Workplace incivility (WPI) has become an issue in healthcare facilities. Incivility characteristics include rude and disrespectful behaviors and an overall disrespectful attitude towards others. Incivility can also be considered bullying. These types of behaviors can harm both staff and patients. It can have a negative effect on patient outcomes which could result in loss of revenue for the healthcare facility. According to Overton and Lowry (2013), the negative consequences of incivility included dysfunctional team work, decreased patient satisfaction, and increased employee turnover. In this paper, we will address the issue of incivility and its importance to nursing, a scenario of incivility will be provided as well as strategies for creating a more healthful environment followed by ways to employ the strategies into the family nurse practitioner (FNP) role.
