NCATT - 4. Basic Circuit
Troubleshooting
Multimeter - answer A measuring instrument for current, voltage, and resistance
Voltmeter - answer A device used to measure voltage, or electrical potential energy
difference. (When checking for zero output voltage, a good starting point is to check the
input)
Ammeter - answer A device used to measure current in a circuit (Used to find problems
power is on the circuit).
Ohmmeter - answer A device used to measure resistance (Used to find circuit problems
when the power is removed from the circuit).
Oscilloscope - answer Measures and displays voltage (AC peak-to-peak) in waveforms
(output) of a wave generating circuit. (Test should be make at each terminal of the
circuit to isolate the problem)
Continuity Check/Test - answerChecks for the existence of a complete electrical system
between two points. (Most of the time a voltmeter or ohmmeter is used to test the
continuity of a circuit. Tests should be made at each terminal of the circuit to isolate the
problem)
Step 1 of 5: Isolate the problem. (proper operation, is the problem ongoing or
intermittent, worse during taxi/takeoff, cruising, landing, etc. Is software loaded properly,
does weather have an effect?) - answerWhat is the first step in the troubleshooting
process?
Step 2 of 5: Check for the obvious. (Loose, bent, frayed broken wires or connections,
inoperative lights, bad bonds and any other cracked or punctured parts, overheating,
adjusting, etc.?) - answerWhat is the second step in the troubleshooting process?
Step 3 of 5: Use troubleshooting charts. (Follow case probabilities by following isolation
procedures and make corrections as per published troubleshooting charts) -
answerWhat is the third step in the troubleshooting process?
Step 4 of 5: Check manufacturer information. (Find info on components or systems in
manufacturer's publications) - answerWhat is the fourth step in the troubleshooting
process?
