Why were Romantics so concerned about the absolutizing of the
human intellect and the scientific method as a means of coming to
know true truth in a final way? Ans: Romanticism was a reaction
against an absolutized human intellect and the mechanistic
natural order it led to -- there is no place for freedom as
everything is a result of cause and effect -- there is no significance!
We have the rise of 'autonomous freedom' or freedom without
restraints, and pessimism. Autonomous freedom replaces
autonomous reason.

Romantics assumed that men cannot live as if they were simply
machines and automatons, as if they were caught up in a
uniformity of cause and effect in a closed system universe. One
could not hold to this view of life while simultaneously attempting
to view man as free, having meaning, having values, sensing love
and emotion.

(1). Emphasis shifted from human reason to human subjectivity
and emotion. You could not hold to both of these (as absolutized)
simultaneously. Emotion, subjectivity is now enthroned as
opposed to reason.

operating under the immutable and indestructible laws of cause
