Stanley Cohen investigated two working class youth subcultures called ‘Mods’ and
‘Rockers’. Cohen studied these groups using a mixed-method approach. This included
using a mixture of primary and secondary methods. His research focused on events
that happened across seaside towns in the UK.

Cohen found that the media contributed to public fear of these youth groups by
exaggerating their deviant behaviour towards each other. Newspaper headlines
amplified the violence and the damage, using words like ‘riot’, ‘battle’, ‘attack’, ‘rival
gangs’. The media reports contributed towards a ‘moral panic’. This led to increased
policing in response to the fear, resulting in more arrests and more young people joining
the ‘Mods’ or the ‘Rockers’. These groups became known as deviant subcultures by
the public.

05 From Item A, examine one strength of using a mixed-method approach.
