Poem:
The Ballad of Father Gilligan
(W.B. Yeats)
Explanation

“The Ballad of Father Gilligan” is a poem about a devoted priest who serves the poor and
sick in his village. Father Gilligan is tired and exhausted because many people are dying due
to an epidemic. Day and night, he goes from house to house, performing prayers for the
dying. One evening, when another sick person needs him, he is so tired that he cries out in
frustration before realising his mistake. He then prays for forgiveness and falls asleep in his
chair.

When he wakes up suddenly, he realises many hours have passed. He becomes scared
because he thinks the dying man might have passed away without receiving the final prayer.
He rushes to the man’s house, but to his surprise, the man’s wife tells him that the priest had
already come and performed all the rituals.

Father Gilligan understands that God sent an angel in his place. The angel came disguised
as him and prayed for the dying man. This miracle happened because Father Gilligan was
sincere and dedicated, even though he was tired. God knew his situation and helped him.

The poem highlights themes like faith, compassion, God’s mercy, and the goodness of
simple people. It reminds us that when someone works selflessly, divine help will come.
