Human Development – Lecture 30 – Psychology emotional

Emotions;
Emotions; complex pattern of changes including physiological reactions, feelings,
cognitive processes and behavioral reactions made in response to a situation
perceived to be personally significant.

What are emotions?
 Physiological reactions; change in rate of breathing, heart, blood pressure
 Feeling & cognitive processes
 Behavioral reaction; laughing, crying

Functions of emotions;
 Effect on cognition; towards learning (essential for survival  decision
making)
 Social behavior; influence behavior of others, regulate own emotions
 Health; influence wellbeing and growth, take pressure mood (stress)

Basal emotions in babies; joy, anger, sadness and fear

Emotional competence;
capacity of an individual to recognize/monitor their own emotions and those of others,
to discriminate between different emotions and label them, and to use emotional
information to guide thinking and behavior.

People decide how to respond through the observation and recognition of the
reaction and facial expression of others.

Parents teach children how to react. Child’s recognition of parent’s emotional begins
during ±12-14 months.

18-24 months; shame and proudness
2-3 years; shyness, guilt (schuld), jealously

Become better in judging emotions because;
 Balance between external and internal factors
 Recognize that thinking and feeling are connected
 Conflicting cues (aanwijzingen) are considered
 Understand mixed emotions

Social experience;
 Care takers; teach about emotions and support emotional thoughts
 Friends; negotiation (onderhandeling) and use emotions in play

Theory of mind;
Possibility to feel or think someone else’s feelings/thoughts or to recognize them and
think & act upon this.
Recognized that other might have other feelings than you
Children 4 years; believe other people take away stuff.
Children 6 years; believe other people don’t take away stuff
