Part One: Choose the Creative Works
1. Describe the two creative works. Feel free to elaborate, but make sure you
include these three items:
A. Your chosen topic (mental health, diversity, or activism)
B. The names of the chosen creative works
C. Why you chose those creative works
A. Your chosen topic: Mental Health
B. The name of the chosen creative work:
I. The painting "Corridor in the Asylum" by Vincent van Gogh
II. Life is Fine" by Langston Hughes
C. Why you chose those creative works of the painting "Corridor in the
Asylum" by Vincent van Gogh
The painting "Corridor in the Asylum" by Vincent van Gogh is an
outstanding example of art in the context of individuals with mental diseases
under the intake care of an institution. This painting also depicts an inmate's

, confinement and the nature of the medical facility during that time, which is alien
and terrifying (Van Gogh, 2006).
The scene of the painting is an elongated corridor of an asylum with blank
walls and a row of doors to the patient's rooms. The placement of the perspective
gives this representation a peculiar feature of depth and encasement that would
remind viewers about what these facilities are – restricted and confined space. It
is stark and encoded in pale color's rather than bright, with the setting like an
institutional, clinical backdrop reflecting the emptiness and lack of substance that
the protagonists feel. One could argue that since Van Gogh himself had a history
of mental illness, he could portray the subject in a much more intensive and
personal manner than way other artists (Van Gogh, 2006). Using Van Gogh's
painting, a viewer is offered a chance and an avenue to advocate consciousness
concerning the psychological complications that stem from art.
2. Describe how the chosen creative works can be used to understand the
topic.
A. How do the different humanities subject areas (visual, literary, and
performing arts) approach the topic?
The painting by Van Gogh called “Corridor in the Asylum” is an excellent
piece of work that can be used as the first model to learn about mental health
