1. General Survey: -begins the moment you enter the exam room
-what you see, hear, and smell
-what you see them doing
2. What is "body habitus"?: -description of their body
- includes socioeconomic status, nutrition, genetics, fitness, mood, presence of disease or illness, SOGI, culture,
geographic location, height, weight, BMI
3. What factors should be included in description of general appearance?: Apparent
state of health
- ill appearing vs. well appearing
- non toxic vs toxic appearing
- frail or cachectic
Level of Consciousness
- awake, alert, responsive vs lethargic
Orientation
- A&O (x1, 2, 3, or 4); person, time (date), place, situation/event
Signs of Distress vs. "NAD"
- Pain: guarding painful area; hyperventilating
