(PO #6) Professor Augustyniak -- Response 1: Professor and classmates, In the case of Mr. R’s surgery for colon cancer that resulted in a temporary colostomy I would use Imogene King’s Systems Interaction Model (Theory of Goal Attainment) to provide professional nursing care. In this theory “the purpose of nursing is to help people attain, maintain, or restore health, primarily by mutual goal setting” (Hood, 2018, p. 137). There are identified 10 concepts relevant to understanding the dynamic interacting systems delineated in King’s mode which are interaction, perception, communication, transaction, role, stress, growth and development, time, self, and space (Hood, 2018, p. 138). According to Hood health is the “dynamic life experiences of a human being, which implies continuous adjustment to stressors in the internal and external environment through optimum use of one’s resources to achieve maximum potential for daily living” and “illness is a deviation from normal” (Hood, 2018, p. 138). This theory states that “nursing’s domain involves human beings, families, and communities as a framework within which nurses make transactions in multiple environments with health as a goal” (Hood, 2018, p. 138). Once Mr. R recovers from surgery I would explain the outcome of the surgery to remove his colon cancer which was resection of the colon a temporary colostomy was performed to aid in the healing process of the colon. At this point I would verify that he was aware that the possibility of the colostomy was discussed with him prior to his surgery and he consented to it. I would address any issues and answer any questions that he might have on to see what his perception is of his new colostomy. I would see if he has any family that he would want involved in his care. Together we would communicate and set mutual goals. During my transactions with Mr. R I would observe him for stress and see how he is coping with his colostomy. As some people may feel disgusted or shameful by having an ostomy ( staff, 2017). Through education on colostomy’s Mr. R would develop skills to cope and care for him self in order for him to reach the goal of having his colostomy reversed. References: Hood, L. J. (2018).
