A1 and A1a. Areas of Need and Explanation
After conducting an environmental scan of Chief Umtuch Middle
School, two non-academic areas were identified as needing improvement:
parent engagement, which falls under the broader category of
communication, and policy implementation and enforcement, which falls
under the broader category of school-level governance. The environmental
scan indicated that while parent volunteers were present and active in
5thgrade and 6th-grade classrooms, there was a noticeable absence of
parent volunteers in 7th-grade and 8th-grade classrooms. The scan also
revealed inconsistencies between teachers and staff in enforcing specific
school policies, such as prohibiting the chewing of gum and wearing hats
inside the school building.
A2. Addressing Needs
To improve parent engagement in 7th-grade and 8th-grade
classrooms, I will survey the 7th-grade and 8th-grade teachers, asking them
to specify tasks and other opportunities that would be helpful to have
parent volunteers do, and have them give parameters for those
opportunities such as specific days, times, and whether the tasks can be
completed at home or in the school building. After analyzing the survey
results, I will create a SignUp Genius website where parents can sign up for
the opportunities that the teachers have selected. The teachers will then
