PKSC 4300: Winding exam
What is winding and unwinding?: practice of constructing and deconstructing a roll
What are the main goals when winding a roll?: We want to wind a roll that avoids blocking,
telescoping, and an uneven edge
What is a winding system?: using mechanical energy to rotate and wind a roll
Describe the internal pressure affect in a roll: the pressure due to a single wrap is exerted on
all the wraps underneath it
Describe slack regions: for large diameter rolls, its possible that the web will fold on itself and produce
a starred roll
Describe a starred roll: When the space available for wrap is smaller than the actual wrap length, a starred
pattern will appear at the ends of the web
Describe telescoping rolls: when the wraps near the center of the roll are wrapped too loosely and
allows for the center to telescope
Describe blocking: when the pressure between wraps leads to adhesion between the wraps in the roll and
makes it diflcult to unwind
