PKSC 4300: Orientation exam
1. Why are films oriented?: To change the properties of plastic materials
- more clear
- make it more dimensionally stable (above T_c)
2. What is orientation?: the process of aligning polymer chains in a direction by stretching the film when
above the glass transition temperature
- can be oriented monoaxially or biaxially
3. Why is a film oriented monoaxially?: when only strength in one direction matters
- offers directional tear
4. Why is a film oriented biaxially?: when strength and stiffness in two direction matters
5. What are the methods of orienting film?: - sequential set of rolls; each moving faster than the
last - MDO
- tentering frame - MDO and CDO
- double bubble - BO
- tripple bubble - BO and heat set
