CEM 141 MSU Exam 1
QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS 2025/2026

Dalton's Atomic Theory - ✔✔Determined that elements are composed
of small, indivisible, and indestructible particles called atoms. Claimed
that all atoms have the same mass and are identical (false).

JJ Thompson - ✔✔Discovered the electron. Used the Cathode Ray Tube
consisting of 2 electrodes which moved particles through the anode
(middle of the tube). Changing the metal in the anode didn't change the
behaviour of the ray; therefore, proved that all electrons are from an
atom.

Cathode Ray Tube - ✔✔An invention by JJ Thompson that involved a
glass tube consisting of 2 electrodes under very low pressure. When
high voltage is emitted, "particles" moved toward the anode. This lead
to the discovery of the electron. The ray moved from Cathode to Anode
and the metal (anode) changed which didn't effect the ray. This proved
that all electrons are from an atom.

Plum Pudding Model - ✔✔An atom model by JJ Thompson that is just
an atom filled with electrons (no proton/nuclei yet). The model looks
like a chocolate chip cookie (MIGHT HAVE TO DRAW).

, Ernest Rutherford - ✔✔Identified the positive (+) charged particle
(proton) in the centre of the atom.

Gold Foil Experiment - ✔✔An experiment by Rutherford that shot
radioactive substance at a piece of gold foil and theoretically, the
substance should go through; however, some particles get deflected
back to the source. Therefore, this proved that there was a positive
charged particle in an atom: the proton.

Rutherford's Planetary Model - ✔✔Not correct in today's standards.
Today's correct method is the proton with the electron cloud.

Correct Atom Model - ✔✔

Gravity and Electromagnetic Similarities - ✔✔-Both require a field
(gravitational or electromagnetic).
-Both require 2 or more objects.

Gravitational Force - ✔✔-Only attractive between objects with mass.
-NOT REPULSIVE. Weaker than electromagnetic force.
-As mass increases, attraction increases (direct relation).
