NR443 Week 8 Discussion, Future Directions • What future concerns are likely to impact public health? • How do you see global health concerns impacting your community? • Identify one way that you can implement population health in your community or workplace. Hello Professor and class, The biggest challenge is the continued failure of decision-makers to reach a consensus on how to address the major health care problems facing the country. Historically, disparities in access to health care and health outcomes were seen between insured and uninsured people. However, the new approach to cost containment asks individuals to pay more for their own health care. It is going to lead to tiering in which those with higher incomes will be able to afford a wider range of health care services that much of the middle class and those with lower incomes. This trend is already visible. Several studies have found that middle-class insured people experience more problems getting the care that is related to cost than people with higher incomes. In addition, middle-class people are substantially more worried than those with higher incomes about paying for health insurance and health care in the future. The obesity epidemic in West Orange is obviously major, but it’s also complex. Lack of exercise is also a major culprit in the obesity epidemic. It’s been decades since most Americans worked in fields and on factory floors, a far greater majority of us are sitting throughout our workday. This means fewer exercises each day. According to one study, only 20% of today’s jobs require at least moderate physical activity, as opposed to 50% of jobs in 1960. Other research suggests Americans burn 120 to 140 fewer calories a day than they did 50 years ago. Add this to the higher amount of calories we are packing in, and we get a perfect recipe for weight gain. () This course has opened my eyes to what a community nurse can do. Our lesson states, “Community health nurses will do what they have always done to make a difference in the health of individuals, families, aggregates, and communities,” (2016). I cannot think of a more accurate statement. The biggest impact that I have seen is where the home health nurse comes in. My eyes have been opened to how hard they work on a daily basis to take care of their patients. They go above and beyond. Reference Chamberlain College of Nursing. (2016).
