NR447 Week 8 Discussion Question, Closing the Loop 1. Compare your scores from Week 2 to Week 8. My score from week 2 was 46 and week 8 was 53. This course has assisted me in improvement in several areas but mostly in the leadership area. It has enhanced the qualities that I have as a leader and afforded me with the knowledge to apply the concepts, skills, decision making, communication skills that are essential to becoming a successful leader. 2. Describe how far have you come and how much further do you wish to go in improving your competencies during the next two years of practice. The course has enhanced the qualities that I have as a leader and afforded me with the knowledge to apply the concepts, skills, decision making, communication skills that are essential to becoming a successful leader. It has helped me to realize the growth potential that I have to be a better leader. One thing that I have gleaned it that I need to learn from the different leadership styles of my leaders. By now being able to identify those style, I can continue to grow and learn to become a more effective leader. It has taught me that while all leadership styles are not positive, I can continue to learn from those styles in effort to become a better leader for my team. 3. According to Holle and Kornusky, (2018), visionary leaders are needed in order to improve nursing and quality of care. I strive to be a visionary leader. According to Tanis (2014), a visionary leader has good communications skills, knows and portrays the vision of the entity that they work for, creative in their leadership, is an intelligent risk taker, is resilient, and favorable toward innovation. I plan to develop these qualities and be not only a mentor, but also a mentee. I love to mentor my co-workers. It may be one of the things that I love best about nursing. Sharing my 20+ year of knowledge and being there for their support is extremely important to me. Through this course, I have also learned the importance of being a mentee. Learning from my leaders and collaborating with them will lend to my growth in professional nursing. I have chosen CO 5 (Demonstrates responsibility for continued personal and professional development through enrollment in graduate education, continuing education degree programs, professional reading and participation in professional organizations and community service). Prior to this course, I felt that earning my BSN was “enough”. This course has caused me to take a deeper look within myself and I now know that while obtaining my BSN is a major milestone, it is no longer “enough”. Thank you for allowing me to see more potential in me than what I believed. I still love the analogy of the Willow Tree that was presented by Finkleman, A. (2016). It stated that nurses are now like willow trees in that we have many branches and must remain flexible. By opening my mind and heart this semester, I now know that, like the willow tree, I will branch out and remain flexible in my career path. 3 more classes for BSN then will begin working on my MSN.
