NR501 WEEK 5 DISCUSSION, ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION OF NURSING MODEL
Week 5: Analysis and Application of a Nursing Model Select either the PCN Framework or the Chamberlain Care Model. Consider how the following components would be included in an analysis of the selected model: • Origin of the model • Meaning of the model • Logical adequacy of the model • Usefulness of the model • Generalizability of the model • Degree of parsimony within the model • Testability of the model What rationale can you provide which validates the selected model as a theoretical framework for nursing practice? Be sure to include scholarly references to support your discussion. The PCN framework was developed by McCormack and McCance in 2006. In 2010, the framework was updated taking account of a multi-disciplinary and interprofessional context, as well as to offer a more comprehensive application in order for applications to practice across different levels of healthcare systems (McCormack & McCance 2006, 2017). The PCN framework is a multidimensional process which focuses on person-centered care delivery (McCance, McCormack, & Dewing, 2011). This framework consists of four constructs which are prerequisites, the care environment, person-centred processes, and outcomes. Effective care within this model is carried out when the individual works from the outer circle first, then into the core. Prerequisites focus on the attributes of the nurses, professional competency, and being committed to the job. The Care Environment focuses on the context in which care is delivered. Person-centred processes focus on delivering care through a range of activities including working with a patient's beliefs and values. Outcomes which are the central component of the PCN Framework, are the results of effective person-centred nursing (McCance et al., 2017). Person-centredness is a concept that has become established in many approaches within health care and nursing. Studies have been completed recently to attempt to clarify the meaning of the term and also to help explore the association in daily practice and to determine the challenges to implementing person-centred approach in practice (Van der Cingel, Brandsma, Dam, Dorst, Verkaart and Velde, 2016). Research has suggested that adopting the person-centred approach to nursing has provided more holistic care which encompasses knowledge, skills, and attitudes in care (McCance, 2017). Also, it may increase satisfaction with care received, satisfaction within nursing work environment, and increase teamwork (McCance et al., 2017). The concept of person is central for other theories in nursing. For example, Madeleine Leininger’s (1988) Transcultural theory incorporates the concept of person through patient’s values, beliefs, and background into nursing. Today, this framework is used as a guide for the structuring of implementation studies that have focused on the development of person-centred nursing. Through the use of the framework in this way, identification and refining relationships between concepts as well as identify new areas of research in nursing has been completed (McCance et al., 2017).
