NR501 WEEK 4 DISCUSSION 1, THEORY AND SPECIALTY AREA OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE (TWO VERSIONS) Identify your specialty area of professional practice. Select a nursing theory from the list of specialty track specific theories provided in the lesson plan or one of your own findings. Address the following: (1) briefly identify concepts of the nursing metaparadigm (remember the selected theory may not include all four concepts); (2) provide an example how the theory could be used to improve or evaluate the quality of practice in your specific setting. Professor and class, The specialty track I have selected is Nurse Educator. Benner’s theory describes the process of how nurses’ transition from a novice nurse to that of an expert nurse in caring for patients. This can be achieved through both acquired educational base knowledge and a multitude of clinical experiences. Benner theorizes that nurses pass through five phases that includes the novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert to become clinically skilled (Higham & Arrowsmith, 2013). At the expert level, the nurses’ thought process has evolved to use empirical experiences versus abstract principle, appeal to intuitions, comprehend various situations at the same time and to becoming the leader of a situation instead of an outside observer (Oshvandi et al., 2016). The components of the nursing metapadigm are all represented in Benner’s theory of each of the phases of knowledge development. These are incorporated into nursing care practices on the patient. The novice nurse completes tasks designed to promote health where the expert nurse initiates research that influence health outcomes I feel that this theory is limitless. I believe the root of patient satisfaction is identifying the identity and uniqueness of one’s patients and give them the dignity they deserve as contributing members of the population. As educators it is our responsibility to educate and enhance ones learning ability to make them the best possible professional they can be. After reading this week’s lesson, I learned that Metaparadigm provides framework for the development of knowledge and nursing theory which includes the concepts of health, person, environment, as well as nursing (CCN, Lesson 4, 2019). A metaparadigm defines the professional discipline and provides a framework for theory and knowledge development. References Chamberlain College of Nursing (2019).
