1. DR: dead reckoning; based on direction (bearing) and distance
2. LOP: Line of Position; a single bearing taken. Used when doing fixes.
3. Running Fix: Determines my position by two bearings taken at DIFFERENT times, for example 15 or 30 minutes
apart. The bearings can be to the same mark or to different marks. The first fix is advanced along the DR course line
for the distance traveled in the time between the two bearings. Where the two bearings cross is the Running Fix.
4. Turn Bearings: On DR course use a pre planned bearing to an object ob land to waymark where to turn in
different direction. Can be done in advance.
5. Dipping a light: When approaching a major lighthouse from a distance, in the beginning flashes on/off due
to curvature of earth, as soon as visible all the time you know you are now in range of that light: look up the table
number for that lights and yourself, add together, that tells you how far away the light is in nm. Take a bearing to the
light and plot the distance on that LOP. Thats your position.
