II. Physiology of Respiration and Ventilation
A. Ventilation vs. Respiration

 Ventilation: The mechanical process of moving air into and out of the
lungs (air movement).

,  Respiration: The physiological process of gas exchange at two levels:
o External Respiration: Exchange of O2 and CO2 between the alveoli
and the blood in the pulmonary capillaries.
o Internal Respiration: Exchange of O2 and CO2 between the
systemic capillaries and the cells of the body.

Purpose of Respiration:

 Provides O2 to cells for metabolic processes.
 Removes waste products, primarily CO2.
 Helps regulate the pH of the blood.

B. Function of Nasal Passages and Nasopharynx

The primary purpose is to warm and humidify the air as it passes through,
preparing it for the lower airways.

C. Muscles Involved in Breathing

 Inhalation (Active Process):
o Diaphragm: The primary muscle of respiration; contraction increases
the volume of the thoracic cavity.
