Maternity Case 2: Brenda Patton

Guided Reflection Questions

Opening Questions

How did the simulated experience of Brenda Patton’s case make you feel?
Describe the actions you felt went well in this scenario.

o This was a good introduction to labor and delivery. Upon meeting Brenda,
she was calm, not in excessive pain and wished not to have any medication.
This made it easier for me to perform required assessments and provide
treatment. It also made is easier for her to receive education on non-
pharmaceutical pain interventions.

Scenario Analysis Questions*

EBP What complications can occur if group B streptococcus is not treated?

o While not common, pregnant GBS+ patients can develop urinary tract
infections, infection of the amniotic fluid and infection of the uterus after
giving birth. GBS infections during pregnancy may lead to preterm labor or,
if the baby is infected while in the uterus, stillbirth. Newborns who are
infected with GBS can develop pneumonia, septicemia, and/or meningitis.

EBP Discuss how GBS is transmitted from the birthing parent to the fetus during
delivery and whether it an STD/STI.
o Group B strep bacteria is not sexually transmitted. Group B strep can spread
to a baby during a vaginal delivery if the baby is exposed to or swallows
fluids containing group B strep.

PCC What should be included in the priority teaching for Brenda Patton?
o Education on GBS and how it is spread to a newborn as well as what could
occur to the newborn if prophylactic antibiotics are not administered prior
to birth should be emphasized.
