Anatomy and Physiology 1Questions and
Answers
Anatomy
The science of the structure of an organism and the relations of its parts
Gross Anatomy
Study of the body its parts that relies only on what the eye can see
Microscopic Anatomy
study of body parts with a microscope
Cytology
study of cells
Histology
study of tissues
pathological anatomy
study of structural changes caused by disease
systemic anatomy
studies the anatomy of each functional body system
Physiology
the study of how the body and its parts work or function; molecular or cellular
physiology, and systemic function.
What are the seven different levels of organization for the human body in order?
1. Chemical Level
2. Organelle Level
3. Cellular Level
4. Tissue Level
5. Organ Level

, 6. Organ System Level
7. Organism Level
Define the Chemical Level of the Levels of Organization:
- First level, Most basic level
- Organization of atoms, ions, molecules, and macromolecules results in living
matter
- At this point structures are non living - just chemical matter
Define the Organelle Level of the Levels of Organization:
- Second Level
- Chemical structures organized to form organelles (Latin for tiny organ)
- Functions of organelles allow cells to live
- Most important organelles within cells are; Nucleus (genetic information
storage), Mitochondria (energy production), Golgi Apparatus (managing proteins
and lipids), Endoplasmic Reticulum (transports proteins and lipids).
- Still not fully alive yet but the "machinery" that lets cells function
Define the Cellular Level of the Levels of Organization:
- Third Level
- Smallest unit of life
- Each cell has a nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm within a limiting membrane
- Cells differentiate to perform unique functions: turning food to energy,
facilitating growth through division, synthesizing proteins, and carrying genes.
Define the Tissue Level of the Levels of Organization:
- Fourth Level
- An organization of similar cells specialized to perform a certain function
- Tissue cells are surrounded by non living matrix
What are the four major tissue types and their function?
1. Epithelial Tissue (Protective layer that serves to protect body surfaces; skin,
linings of organs, tissue glands)
2. Connective Tissue (Supports and connects different types of tissues in the
body)
