Interview Summary
In this interview, I sat with Laurent James, who is a nurse manager at the Hackensack
University Medical Center. During this interview, I gained tremendous insights regarding the
current issues and challenges that the hospital is facing. Hackensack University Medical
Center is a top ranked healthcare facility located in Hackensack, New Jersey, and serves a
diverse range of patients. Laurent's role in the facility is to oversee the nursing staff, patient
care management care, and allocation of resources, and also ensure that the hospital confirms
safety and quality standards. Some of the major issues we discussed with her during the
interviews include a high infection rate from hospital-acquired infections, especially surgical
site infections, and also the lack of interdisciplinary collaboration and communication.
Laurent voiced her frustration with the lack of collaboration between the various
departments, especially the surgical services and the nursing department, which often results
in delayed administration of patient care and unnecessary complications. Ms. Laurent
admitted that in past efforts to address these issues, the implementation has failed and insisted
that there was a need for a more comprehensive and systemic approach to deal with these
challenges amicably. Laurent also stated that the hospital's endeavor to implement
interdisciplinary collaboration teams has not worked out well due to a lack of commitment
from the individual members.
Issue Identification
Based on the information obtained from the interview the main issue that will be
worked on in this proposal will mainly be; the lack of interdisciplinary collaboration and
communication and the high rates of surgical site infections at Hackensack University
Medical Center. These two issues are a significant threat to the safety of the patient and result
in unnecessary healthcare operation costs. Addressing these issues needs a multi-pronged
