BIO 260 Pathogenesis
1. Pathogenesis: study of development of disease
-what are the molecules
2. Epidemiology: study of spread and control of disease
3. Why do we care: What specific agent cause disease?
How does the agent cause disease in the body?
4. History: Disease and plagues attributed to supernatural forces
Disease seems to be comunable
1600 there are microbes
1800 microbes cause disease
Robert Koch(1843-1910) proof of causative agent
5. Koch's Postulates steps: 1. The same pathogen must be present in every case of the disease.
2. The pathogen must be isolated from the diseased host and grown in pure culture.
3. The pathogen from the pure culture must cause the disease when it is inoculated into a healthy, susceptible laboratory
animal.
4. The pathogen must be isolated from the inoculated animal and must be shown to be the original organism.

, 6. Koch's Postulates Cant be used for all disease: -Some pathogens can cause several diseases
-some pathogens cause disease only in humans
-some pathogens are not easily cultivated
7. normal microbiota: microbes normally present in and on the human body
8. transient microbiota: may be present for days, weeks, or months and then disappear
not your normal microbiota
9. Symbiosis: The relationship between normal microbiota and the host
1. Commensalism- one organism benefits, and the other is unaffected
2. Mutualism: both organisms benefit
3. Parasitism- one organism benefits at the expense of the other
4. opportunistic pathogens might become pathogenic/normal microbes into the wrong spot
10. Normal microbes on the human: 1.skin
2.eyes
3.mouth
4.urinary tract
5.Nose +throat
