Self-awareness
Professional self-awareness is crucial to nurses as it allows them to take control
of their feelings and personality, ensuring that they do not act emotionally in the
workplace. The outcome of self-awareness can be considered a coping mechanism that
allows nurses to recognize their emotional vulnerabilities and learn how to control them
in a high-stress healthcare setting (Alodhialah et al., 2024). For example, a nurse may
become annoyed with a specific patient. Instead of acting annoyed, he or she will take a
moment, reflect on his or her emotions, and take an appropriate professional approach
instead of an irritable one. Also, self-awareness enables the nurses to be aware of their
bias and prejudice, ensure they treat all patients equally and maintain good workplace
relations.
Self-management
Self-management strategies enable a nurse to control his/her emotions, avoid
being pressured, and act appropriately during difficult circumstances. Nurses delivering
care in settings such as Intensive Care Units work under pressure and should be ready
to adapt quickly while remaining professional. For instance, when a nurse experiences a
role conflict, such as a disagreement with another nurse regarding the best approach
toward a patient's treatment plan, self-management helps them to engage in a reasoned
and professional manner and not be defensive. Additionally, self-management
necessitates emotionally intense stress-reduction techniques such as breathing
techniques, mindful meditation, and effective time management (Qama et al., 2022).
By managing their reactions and working towards the solution, nurses help create a
favorable work atmosphere.
Interpersonal Communication
Communication is vital, particularly in conflict management, patient care, and
cooperation among members of the nursing field. Nurses must communicate regularly
with physicians, patients, and other healthcare teams for safe patient care (Noviyanti et
al., 2021). For example, while presenting a handoff report, it is crucial and mandatory
for a nurse to effectively yet briefly share basic and essential details about a patient to
the next shift to avoid errors. Moreover, when it comes to conflicts at the workplace,
