QUESTION 1 1.1 Define Kinetic energy. (2) 1.2 Explain how energy is
transferred in an ecosystem. (2)

1.1 Define Kinetic Energy (2)

Kinetic energy is the energy that an object possesses due to its motion. It depends on the object’s
mass and the speed (velocity) at which it is moving, and it can be calculated using the formula:

KE=12mv2KE = \tfrac{1}{2}mv^2KE=21mv2

where m = mass and v = velocity.

1.2 Explain how energy is transferred in an ecosystem (2)

In an ecosystem, energy is transferred through the food chain and food webs. Plants (producers)
capture energy from the sun through photosynthesis and store it as chemical energy. Herbivores
(primary consumers) eat the plants, transferring energy to their bodies. Carnivores (secondary
and tertiary consumers) then gain energy by eating other animals. At each level, some energy is
lost as heat, respiration, and waste, while the rest moves to the next trophic level.

1.1 Define Kinetic energy. (2)

, Kinetic energy is the energy that an object possesses due to its motion. It depends on both the
object's mass and its velocity.

1.2 Explain how energy is transferred in an ecosystem. (2)

Energy is transferred through an ecosystem starting primarily with producers capturing solar
energy via photosynthesis, which is then passed to primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers as
organisms feed along the food chain.
