OUM2 Task 3: Technology in Algebra
A. Describe in detail a technology-based game that could be used to
teach secondary algebra by doing the following:
1. Identify the game and a specific secondary algebra concept that
is a key component of the game.
A technology-based game that could be used to teach secondary
algebra is a Factoring Battleship game that’s specific focus is on
factoring polynomials. In the beginning of the game, the student can
select the level of difficulty as well as reposition their ships to their
liking. Once set, the student can start the game. The game works as a
typical battleship does, where the student and computer system will
go back and forth selecting where they believe the other players
ships are. If the student selects a block where their opponents ship
is, a factoring question will appear. If the student answers the
question correctly, it results as a hit to their opponent’s ship. If they
answer the question incorrectly, on their next turn they can attempt
to answer a new question to successfully hit their opponent’s ship.
2. Explain how the game effectively addresses the secondary
algebra concept identified in part A1 and how the game provides
learning opportunities for the student to master the concept,
including specific examples.
This game effectively addresses the secondary algebra concept of
factoring polynomials by providing an interactive and engaging
platform for students to actively practice the different types of
factoring. It offers learning opportunities through its many features.
The first being the ability to set the difficulty level for students. In the
