• Tegmentum
§ Red nucleus
§ Reticular formation
• Substania Niagra
• Cerebral Peduncles

BRAIN STEMà SAGITTAL SECTION
POSTERIOR VIEW OF BRAINSTEM
3 major parts: tectum. Tegmentum, and crus cerebri
OVERVIEW OF STRUCTURES
,PROPERTY OF TAHEYA ASAD DO NOT COPY
BRAIN STEM: MIDBRAIN
MAIN landmarks of midbrain are the red nucleus, superior colliculi and oculomotor nucleus
MIDBRAIN
Most rostral part (toward head) of brainstem
Rostral to pons
Means middle of the brain aka “mesencephalon”
TECTUM
“latin for roof”
Posterior region of midbrain
Dorsal (posterior) to the cerebral aqueduct
The tectum houses 4 rounded prominences called collectively the quadrigeminal plate , these prominences are called
the colliculi, these colliculi sit inferior to the pineal gland. There is a superior colliculi and inferior colliculi.

When you take a cross section of the above images, thru rostral part of mid brain at the level of the superior
colliculi, this is what you see
MIDBRAIN@ LEVEL OF SUPERIOR COLLICULI
