PLAGIARISM AND ITS FORMS
Plagiarism is a serious academic problem because it happens when a researcher
presents another person’s ideas, words or writing as though they were their own
work.1 Proper acknowledgement is important because referencing shows where
information came from and recognises the contribution made by other writers. 1 The
study guide describes plagiarism as wrongful appropriation of another person’s ideas
or expression and also explains that using another researcher’s ideas or writing
without citing the source amounts to academic fraud.1
The first form is direct copying from a published source without proper
acknowledgement.1 This happens when a student takes wording from a textbook,
journal article or other published material word for word but does not clearly show
that the wording belongs to another author.1 For example, copying several
