Advanced Professional Nurse as
Advocate

Advanced professional nurses are constantly having to serve as advocates for

patients. It is imperative that patients are listened to, and taken seriously whenever they

have any type of concern. By being advocates for patients it allows trust to be established,

and improves the overall health of the patient. “The Registered Nurses described patient

advocacy as promoting patient safety and quality care which includes the following:

protecting patients, being patients' voice, provision of quality care and interpersonal

relationship as well as educating patients” (Nsiah, Siakwa, & Ninnoni, 2019, p. 1124). As

an advanced practice nurse it is essential that they focus on the welfare of the patient in

the healthcare setting. It is an advanced practice nurse's job to make sure that the needs of

the patient are met to their standards and that the patient is satisfied.

A lot of times within the healthcare system advanced practice nurses are not only

advocating for patients on a day to day basis, but they are also advocating for individuals

that are part of an at-risk population. This can differ from the normal advocating that may

be done each day. When dealing with someone that is part of an at-risk population,

advanced practice nurses must look at the common issues within that certain population,

find out what needs to be changed, initiate, and implement a policy. This can be difficult at

times due to the need to find

the policymakers within that community and addressing to them the need for a new policy

within the community. However, it is a great success when advanced practice nurses are

able to communicate with policymakers, allow them to see the need for a new policy, and

improve the overall well-being of the community.
