Introduction
The phrase “theory is the engine of research” implies that theoretical concepts act as
the primary force behind scholarly inquiry. Just as an engine powers a vehicle, theory
provides momentum, focus, and direction for research endeavours. Without it, studies
risk becoming scattered, descriptive, or lacking in coherence. However, this metaphor
must be examined critically. While theory often supplies the conceptual grounding that
drives knowledge forward, not every study begins with theoretical assumptions, nor do
all research projects necessarily end with theoretical conclusions. In some traditions,
theory emerges from interaction with empirical data rather than preceding it. This
section defines theory, explores the metaphor of the “engine,” and situates the
discussion within broader methodological debates.
What Is Theory?
Definitions of theory differ across academic disciplines. Kerlinger (1979) offered a
widely cited definition, describing theory as “a set of interrelated constructs, definitions,
and propositions that presents a systematic view of phenomena by specifying relations
