ABSTRACT
This research examines how e-learning shapes accessibility and learning effectiveness
within Open Distance Learning (ODL) settings in higher education, with a focus on
Unisa’s Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) context. The study aims to (i) evaluate the
extent to which e-learning platforms and digital resources improve access (geographic,
financial, and disability inclusion) and (ii) assess their influence on effectiveness
indicators such as student engagement, course completion, and perceived learning
outcomes. Guided by an information-systems perspective, the project proposes an
explanatory sequential design: an initial quantitative survey of undergraduate and
postgraduate ODeL students (to measure access, usage patterns, and outcomes)
followed by qualitative interviews with students and academic staff (to unpack platform,
pedagogical, and support factors driving the results).
The literature review will synthesise recent evidence on digital inclusion, LMS usability,
instructional design, and student support models in distance education to develop a
conceptual framework linking technology readiness, engagement, and success. No
primary data will be collected for this assignment; instead, expected results are inferred
from prior studies and aligned to the proposed methods. Anticipated contributions
include (a) a context-specific framework for evaluating accessibility and effectiveness in
ODeL, (b) practical recommendations on learner support and LMS design, and (c)
pointers for DHET/Unisa policy on digital equity. The study’s significance lies in
