Question 1
1.1 Assessment to Identify Learners with Learning Difficulties
As an educator, I would use diagnostic assessment to identify a learner with learning
difficulties. Diagnostic assessment is conducted before or at the beginning of instruction
to determine the learner’s strengths, weaknesses, prior knowledge, and specific barriers
to learning (Gravett, 2020). It focuses on uncovering the reasons behind academic
struggles rather than simply measuring achievement.
The importance of diagnostic assessment lies in the fact that it helps teachers to
pinpoint the exact nature of the learner’s difficulties. This allows for targeted
support and intervention strategies to be implemented early (Killen, 2015). By identifying
specific challenges such as poor fine motor skills, short attention span, or behavioural
difficulties, educators are able to design differentiated learning activities that address
the learners’ individual needs, thereby promoting inclusivity and equity in the classroom.
