●​ 15% of body burned or more = SEVERE BURN
●​ Will see a lower body temperature with severe burn patients because they
are constantly losing fluids & are open to air (heat gets released)
○​ Poikilothermia
●​ Keep burn victim NPO & in side-lying position to prevent aspiration
●​ First thing you do is STOP THE BURNING PROCESS
●​ Chemical burns need to be irrigated immediately
●​ Cover burn as quickly as possible to minimize bacterial contamination
●​ Potassium gets released from damaged cells → HYPERKALEMIA
●​ Rule of Nines: TEST QUESTION
○​ Head & Neck = 9%
○​ Anterior trunk = 18%
○​ Posterior Trunk = 18%
○​ Each Arm = 9% → up to elbow = 4.5%
○​ Each Leg = 18% → up to knee = 9%
○​ Perineum = 1%
●​ Fluid resuscitation is determined by TBSA burn
●​ Smoke inhalation injury → Damage to the respiratory system due to
breathing in smoke (carbon monoxide)
○​ Carbon monoxide attaches to hemoglobin & prevents oxygen from
entering the cells
○​ Give HIGH FLOW 02 on 8-10L
●​ Zone of Coagulation is the most severe for burn wound repair
●​ Zone of hyperemia is the least severe
●​ Tetanus prophylaxis is usually 10 years, but with burn they automatically
are given a tetanus shot (1) → with nail in foot tetanus q5 years
●​ High protein, high calorie diet
●​ Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is the leading cause of blindness in children
●​ Otitis media is the main cause of hearing loss in children
