Classification of waves
Mechanical wave → require a medium (matter) for propagation.
Electromagnetic wave → do not require a medium (matter) for propagation.
Progressive wave → net transfer of energy (from a source to an absorber).
Stationary/standing wave → no net transfer of energy. energy is stored in
the wave.
Transverse wave → oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of energy
transfer.
Longitudinal wave → oscillation is parallel to the direction of energy transfer.
❗ Note: Waves transfer energy, not matter.
Measuring waves
A = amplitude[m]
=maximum displacement from
equilibrium / rest position.
