With the above in mind, you are expected to present a research proposal (a
research plan, which forms part of Assignment 01) to the Institute of Democratic
Affairs, where you highlight the following:
Introduction
Content Analysis of Sports Coverage in The Star (COM3706 Assignment 1)
This research plan will study how a South African daily newspaper, The Star, writes and
reports about sports. The main purpose is to find out what kinds of sports stories
appear, how often they are written, and what patterns can be seen in the newspaper.
The plan will also explain the problem we are looking at, the smaller questions that will
guide us, what other writers and researchers have said, the theory we use to
understand the stories, and the methods we will follow to collect and study the
information. The Star is chosen because it is one of the most well-known newspapers in
South Africa. It is read by many people and covers important local and international
news, including sports. Because of this, it is a good example to show how sports are
reported to the public. My study will look closely at the sports section in The Star to see
which sports get the most attention, how players and teams are shown, and what kinds
of messages or stories the newspaper shares with its readers.
