United States. The first was the 14th amendment, which was added to the constitution after the Civil
War, it defined what an American citizen was. It said that “all persons born or naturalized in the
Unites States” were citizens. This amendment also kept states from taking a person’s life, liberty, and
property without due process of the law. (Norton,2015).
Second was the 15th amendment of the constitution. The amendment stated that no state could
refuse a person the right to vote “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude”. This
presented black men with the right to vote. This however did not stop states from creating other
qualifications that most black or poor people could not meet. (Norton,2015). Despite states
attempting to keep African Americans out of political decisions, many still showed up to vote.
The third was the new southern Republican Party which emerged at the 1868-1870
